Big Wood Timber Frames, Inc.

In 1989 Dave LePage and Mike Nicklaus created Big Wood Timber Frames, Inc., a licensed homebuilder in the state of Minnesota. We specialize in custom-built timber frame homes. Our philosophy is that a home should provide for the current and future needs of the family, fit within their budget requirements, and compliment the surrounding environment.  We offer design and contracting services that help you achieve those goals.

  • Original surface: the surface of the timbers is left unchanged from its appearance in the original structure.  We take a wire brush to clean it of the decades of dust and dirt and can leave the timber un-finished, stained, or sealed with a varnish.

  • Re-sawn: the rough layer of a beam is cut away to reveal the clear wood underneath.  This wood is then planed and sanded to provide a perfectly smooth surface for stain, a wash or a clear sealer.

  • Hand hewn: occasionally we are fortunate to recover timbers from a structure that were not shaped using industrial methods (sawmills) but were instead shaped with the skill of an ax.  Hand hewn beams provide a very rustic feel to a home and we believe that the character and history of these beams blends perfectly with the esthetic qualities of our designs.

Along with our custom home building, Big Wood Timber Frames has embarked on creating an eco-friendly development near Brainerd, MN. Hazeltine Bay development is a beautiful planned community of 16 home sites within a 97+ acre wooded nature preserve with access to the Mississippi River and Pickerel Lake. This community will feature: a private road, protective covenants, common areas, waterfront walking trails, a marina and boat slips. Waterfront living within minutes of downtown and golfing.
